Work on the project started in September on the site in front of the car park in Beaufort Street. The centre will comprise 2 floors to accommodate up to date computer facilities and office services previously provided by CRiC in the Market Hall, accredited provision of tourist information services, facilities for other helping agencies to serve the community regularly (hot desk services), coffee shop, Crickhowell Volunteer Bureau, Crickhowell Archive Group, an art and craft gallery, conference/meeting rooms and new public toilets. The Centre will be built and fitted out ready for the Community’s use in the middle of next year.
CRiC is a non-profit making charity, which is run by a Management Board. Directors are local people representing all the areas within Crickhowell’s wider community. Board members also contribute a wide variety of expertise, which is of relevance to the new Centre. Business skills, tourism, marketing, information technology, local government, volunteering, careers advice and employment are just some of the areas of their expertise. Between them they also represent direct contact with many of the organisations both locally and on a wider scale.
The project is funded from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Objective 2 and from Powys County Council’s Local Regeneration Fund to build and equip the centre. Financial support is also being provided by the Welsh Development Agency and the Tourism Partnership Mid Wales.
The overall aim of the European Regional Development Fund’s Objective 2 transitional programme is to promote economic growth in East Wales with the key objectives of increasing employment opportunities across the region, encouraging economic diversification and developing sustainable communities.
Whilst waiting to move into the new premises, CRiC, which is supported by the Sustainable Development Fund – Brecon Beacons National Park Authority currently occupies the 1st floor of the Market Hall and provides computer access, training, high tech digital photocopying facilities and office services to the community. CRiC also has a careers information point and produces a bi-monthly community newsletter and regularly provides support to a number of local groups and charitable organisations.
