New weekly food collection and recycling services that are being introduced across Powys as part of a major initiative to reduce the amount sent to landfill come to Crickhowell at the end of October.
Powys has long been one of Wales’ leading recycling counties but needs to increase recycling rates to meet stringent targets and avoid massive financial penalties being imposed upon it.
The combination of weekly paper, glass, cans, textile, plastic bottles and food collections together with fortnightly wheeled bin collections for non-recyclable material aims to take the county’s recycling rate to 70 per cent.
Councillor Ken Harris, Board Member for Waste said: “Powys has an impressive track record for recycling in Wales. But, we need to do even better and reduce the volume of rubbish buried, we have to increase the amount we Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle.
“We are planning major changes; a comprehensive efficient service that will be delivered to all households giving residents a chance to help us meet challenging national targets.
"Carrying on as we always have is not an option. We have to change and reduce the amount of rubbish we simply landfill or face severe financial penalties,” he added.
