First exhibition of 2009

Sunday 18th January 2009

Since its opening in September 2007 the oriel cric gallery in Crickhowell has been steadily building a reputation as a venue for Welsh art and craft of excellent quality. Visitor numbers to the gallery continue to grow steadily. It  offers a beautiful space  for local and visiting artists to exhibit their work. During 2009 the new curator, Stuart Neale is looking forward to presenting a diverse range of contemporary work by local and visiting artists to complement that of the members of the

Black Mountains Circle. The Welsh landscape acts as inspiration for many of the artists who are currently exhibiting. The range of techniques employed by embroiderer Sue Atkins captures the contrasts, nuances and beauty of the landscape in exciting textile pieces. The 3 works exhibited in the gallery have the collective title of “Standing Stones”, but stand as individual works of exceptional beauty. Local artists Jantien Powell, Bridget Stevens and Jenny Care will remain part of the current exhibition. They will be joined by newcomer Christopher Bennett from Ross on Wye. Mandy Nash, who like Sue Atkins is a member of the Makers Guild in Wa;es , produces colourful and affordable jewellery in anodised aluminium. As she is always experimenting with new ideas, her work is certainly worth a visit. The gallery is also pleased to welcome the work of furniture makers Rachel and Arthur Cadman who   design and make contemporary hardwood furniture. The beautiful timber which they use for unique pieces is selected through sustainable woodland management in the Brecon Beacons where their workshop is based. The exhibition will run until mid March 2009.  The Crickhowell Resource and Information Centre also offers tourist information, room hire, internet access and has  a small coffee bar.
