Flamboyant Autumn exhibition in the oriel cric gallery

Friday 28th August 2009

As summer slips into the “season of mists and mellow fruitfulness” the oriel cric gallery will be hosting an exhibition entitled Flamboyant Autumn. It promises to be a beautifully varied exhibition which will reflect the colour and textures of the season. Work will range from blankets and wraps to less functional textiles on which to feast your  eyes.  Sioni Rhys Handweavers create beautiful, traditional Welsh patterned throws, rugs and wraps in pure new wool in the tradition of wool weaving for which the district of Abergavenny was once renowned. These are just the thing to comfort as the  autumn temperature drops.    Textile artist Alison Moger on the other hand produces innovative and comtemporary work of great charm, while exploring the use of traditional stitch and print. She is inspired by her surroundings, as well as family life and community. Every picture has its own narrative. Ceramics by Jan Beeney and Pauline Paterson will complement the textiles.  Jan Beeney makes  unusual one-off, slab-built ceramic pieces on a variety of scales which   are based largely on animals. Although she deliberately tries to avoid  anthropomorphic sentimentality, there is humour and great character in her work. They are well worth a viewing. Pauline Paterson specializes in functional pieces and pots that are practical enough for everyday use, but still special. Regular exhibitors David Haswell and Keith Foster will be joined by Anthony Evans and local artist Margaret Llewellyn Jones who both produce vibrant paintings inspired by the Welsh landscape.  Feelings, emotions, dreams, memories and the landscape of are the main themes that underpin the work of Anthony Evans, well known artist from Cardiff. Along with the Margaret’s colographs it should be a true celebration of colour to complement the work of the members of the Black Mountains Circle. The exhibition will run for 2 months starting on the 10th of September. The oriel cric gallery in the Crickhowell Resource & Information Centre is open daily between 10am and 5pm.  Disabled access available.
